Data Security, Privacy Bill is Dropped in Congress

WASHINGTON– A priority of credit unions, a new bill has been dropped in Congress around personal data security.

Suzan DelBene

The Information Transparency & Personal Data Control Act was introduced by Rep. Suzan DelBene (D-WA) and is designed to “ensure that consumers are afforded meaningful transparency that enables them to direct how personal information is used, collected, and shared.”

Both CUNA and NAFCU have long been calling for national legislation around data security and privacy. The two CU trade groups are not alone.

“It’s time for Congress to pass a national privacy law that gives every American the right to control their privacy, no matter where they live, with a clear set of rules for all businesses, no matter where they operate,” said Tom Quaadman, EVP with the U.S. Chamber Technology Engagement Center. “The Information Transparency and Personal Data Control Act is a promising first step in bringing consumers, the private sector, and policymakers together to protect sensitive information from bad actors. We thank Rep. DelBene for her leadership and look forward to partnering with her to make this legislation a reality.”

Support for ‘Equal’ Protection

The U.S. Chamber said it supports the passage of national privacy legislation that protects all Americans equally.

“Consumers should have the ability to know how data is used, collected, and to opt-out of sharing data,” the Chamber said. “An emerging patchwork of state privacy laws creates confusion and makes compliance difficult for companies, particularly small businesses. The Chamber has long advocated that experienced federal agencies like the Federal Trade Commission enforce a national privacy law.”
