OMAHA, Neb. – The Defense Credit Union Council hosted its 2022 Midwest Conference here, co-hosted by Cobalt CU.
DCUC said the meeting focused on important industry topics related to serving the military, including financial technology, wellness, and advocacy updates.
In 1972, DCUC and Cobalt CU, then called Strategic Air Command (SAC) FCU, held the first Midwest Sub-council Conference in Omaha, with what was described as a “close-knit group” of credit union leaders and supportive guests.
“This was a pivotal moment in DCUC’s history, starting a 50-year tradition of Midwest Sub-council credit unions gathering to reconfirm their dedication in serving our military communities,” according to DCUC.
Added Robin Larsen, Cobalt CU president/CEO, “We're excited to have brought together defense credit unions and credit union supporters from across the Midwest and beyond.”
DCUC and Cobalt CU said the lineup of speakers included Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska’s 2nd District, Brigadier Gen., USAF Retired; Colonel Mark D. Howard, vice commander, 55th Wing, Offutt AFB, Neb., Gigi Hyland, executive director of the National Credit Union Foundation. Topics covered included advocacy issues and the environment on Capitol Hill, team-coaching, and ways for credit unions to improve the financial well-being of their members.
‘Great Opportunity’
“This year’s Midwest Conference proved to be another great opportunity for our member credit unions and guests to gain insight from top industry leaders,” said Anthony Hernandez, DCUC president/CEO. “While not the largest credit union conference offered, the topics covered were practical and well-received by our attendees. I was impressed by the amount of questions and dialogue spurred by the presentations.”
The conference also featured special guest Zeke Crozier, staff sergeant, US Army (ret.), owner and Artist behind Handy-Cappin’, and a Purple Heart recipient. Crozier partnered with DCUC and the Armed Forces Financial Network (AFFN) to create two pieces of art to present to this year’s Cobalt CU, along with Denise Floyd, retiring president/CEO of Fort Sill FCU, for their contributions.
Donation Announced
“We were also honored to recognize Denise Floyd for her many years of leadership and commitment to DCUC, and her collaborative efforts while serving on the Midwest Sub-Council,” stated Hernandez.
During the meeting Larsen also announced the SAC Foundation, Cobalt CU’s charitable foundation, would be donating $10,000 to the Omaha Fisher House in Zeke Crozier’s honor. The Fisher House Foundation is committed to improving the quality of life for military, veterans, their families, and caregivers.
