‘Cyber-Incident’ Led to Closure of CUNA Offices

WASHINGTON—CUNA is reporting it has re-opened its offices as the result of what sources told CUToday.info could be a malware attack that has shut down many of its systems.

In a statement to CUToday.info, CUNA said it has experienced a “cyber incident.” The trade group did not confirm or deny whether malware was the culprit. CUNA sent employees home on Monday but indicated its workers have returned to work today even as systems issues are ongoing.

“CUNA is currently addressing a cyber incident that recently caused an outage affecting some of our IT systems. Once we discovered the incident, we immediately initiated an investigation with the assistance of third-party experts and are taking steps to remediate the issue,” stated Vicki Christner, vice president of strategic communications.

Christener emphasized the problem is a “business disruption issue.”

“CUNA does not store Social Security numbers or credit card numbers of our members. Based on our investigation to date, we have no evidence to suggest that any data in our system – such as names, businesses addresses and email addresses – have been accessed,: Christener continued. “We regret any inconvenience this may cause and are working diligently to restore our systems as quickly as we can and to put in measures to support our league partners and members. Our investigation remains ongoing.”
