WASHINGTON–Primaries are being held in eight states today, with credit unions and their political action committees having a stake in some of the races.
Elections are being held in Alabama, California, Iowa, Mississippi, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota. CUNA’s Trey Hawkins, VP-political affairs, said the trade group, state leagues and the Credit Union Legislative Action Committee (CULAC) are supporting “dozens” of candidates on both sides of the aisle.
Among the races today in which credit unions have gotten involved are:
- In Alabama’s second district, CUNA and the League of Southeastern Credit Unions are supporting incumbent Rep. Martha Robey (R), who is in a five-way race in the Republican primary that includes the former campaign manager for Roy Moore.
- In California, which uses a unique ballot system in which all candidates regardless of party run against each other, with the top two moving on to November’s elections, CUNA and the California/Nevada leagues are supporting incumbent Sen. Diane Feinstein (D), who is widely expected to be returned to Congress even though there are 31 candidates in the primary.
- In California’s 10th district, credit unions are supporting incumbent Rep. Jeff Denham (R), who is part of an eight-way race, six of whom are Democrats.
- In Mississippi’s third district, CULAC and the Mississippi Credit Union Network are backing Michael Guest in a race for the open seat. Guest is one of six Republicans seeking the nomination to represent his party.
- In New Jersey’s second district, the New Jersey CU League and CULAC are supporting State Sen. Jeff Van Drew (D).
Hawkins said CUNA/CULAC have remained neutral in numerous races around the country in which there are open seats, including in two of the three seats in New Mexico and South Dakota’s single House seat.
“We will work with the respective leagues in coming weeks to identify the strongest candidate for credit unions to back,” said Hawkins.
