WASHINGTON–Credit unions’ attention to members of Congress will primarily be in their home districts and states in the coming month. The House is already in recess, and the Senate, which is currently scheduled to remain in session through next week, has indicated it may skip town early for the traditional August break.
The Senate has a number hearing and votes set around nominations this week, noted Eli Joseph, CUNA’s deputy chief advocacy officer.
Richard Gose, CUNA's chief political officer, said the coming month will be an opportunity for credit unions to keep the association’s Campaign for Common Sense Regulation front and center with legislators in their home districts.
“We want to make sure our members are meeting with Congress,” Gose said.
Gose said the Campaign for Common Sense Regulation, through CUNA’s Member Activation Program (MAP), has reached more than one-million members and that its online ads have been seen by 400,000 unique visitors. The website has also seen 25,000 unique visitors, 80% of whom have taken some type of action, he said. The benefit there, Gose explained, is in having members of Congress hear real-world stories from real people in their home districts.
