SAN FRANCISCO—Uber is getting into the debit card business.
The ride-sharing company has launched a debit card that is available to Uber Mexico customers, reported Mashable.
Uber has launched the Uber Bankaool debit card in partnership with Mastercard and the Mexican online bank Bankaool. Mashable said the debit card functions like all other debit cards and is usable for in-store purchases, e-commerce, etc.
“We are very excited to [be] able to offer safe, reliable and affordable rides to more people with this new card, which will be available for all Mexicans. With this partnership, we reaffirm our commitment with Mexico to make transportation available for everyone," Francisco Sordo, the head of Uber for Mexico and Central America, said in a statement reported in Mashable.
The move, said Mashable, will help Uber attract more customers in Mexico, where some debit providers don't allow e-commerce purchases like Uber rides.
Mashable surmised that the deal is likely limited in scope. “It doesn't make much sense for Uber to introduce more debit cards in markets where customers already have plenty of access to credit and debit cards that work online,” Mashable said.
