Credit Unions Have Eye on One Particular Race in Massachusetts Today

Richard Neal

WASHINGTON–With just four state primaries remaining prior to November’s general elections, credit unions are watching the one primary taking place today, in this case in Massachusetts.

CUNA’s Credit Union Legislative Action Council and the Cooperative Credit Union Association, which represents CUs in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Delaware, are backing all six congressional incumbents running for reelection in the today’s primary.

The closest race, according to CUNA’s Trey Hawkins, is expected to be in Massachusetts’ first district where Rep. Richard Neal (D) is facing a challenge from Alex Morse, mayor of Holyoke, Mass.

Hawkins said Neal, who is chair of the House Ways & Means Committee, has the full support of credit unions as he had been a “long-time champion of the credit union tax status.”

To date, added Hawkins, CULAC has supported 338 candidates who have won their respective party’s nominations, a 96% success rate.
