Credit Unions Backing 28 Candidates in Today’s Primaries, With Particular Focus on One Race

WASHINGTON–Six more primaries are being held today, and credit unions are again backing numerous candidates in each of the states.

The primaries, several of which were postponed to today as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, are being held in Georgia, Maine, North Dakota, Nevada, South Carolina and West Virginia. In all, the Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC) and the respective state leagues are supporting 28 different candidates, according to Trey Hawkins, CUNA’s deputy chief advocacy officer for political action.

Hawkins said the race to which credit unions will be paying the closest attention is that for the open congressional seat to represent Georgia’s seventh district, just outside Atlanta, where incumbent Republican Rob Woodall is not running for re-election.

Hawkins, noting the race is very competitive, said CULAC and the Georgia league are backing Republican State Sen. Renee Unterman, one of seven Republicans seeking the nomination. There are also six Democrats in the race to win the nomination and appear on the November ballot.
