FLINT, Mich.–Several credit unions here have stepped in to help local residents as a water crisis continues to plague the local water system.
A public health emergency has been declared in Flint after tests showed the water supply is causing elevated levels of lead in children. Locals have also been complaining about the taste and smell of the water.
Seeking to provide assistance, Team One CU and FM Financial CU teamed up with other Saginaw and Flint area businesses to donate water to benefit schools and families in the Flint area, according to the Michigan CU League.
The credit unions joined with other businesses to help collect and distribute nearly 16,000 bottles of drinking water.
“It’s just such a blessing to see the strong support that Flint residents have received from our friends in Saginaw and of course those locally. FM Financial CU is proud to partner with these great organizations and volunteers to help provide some relief for local families and children struggling to have basic access to clean water,” stated Carl Hawkins, board chairman of FM Financial Credit Union, in a statement first published by the Michigan CU League.
