Credit Union-Sponsored College Bowl Game Comes to End

SAN DIEGO–It’s game over for the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl, the only college bowl game sponsored by a credit union.

According to the San Diego Bowl Game Association, it will focus its attention on just one bowl game—the Holiday Bowl. Both the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl and the Holiday Bowl are played at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, usually within weeks of one another.

In addition, the college bowl season has become bloated, with more than 40 bowls played at the conclusion of the 2016 season.

“College football and the bowl game structure has gone through major changes through the years and our board feels the time is right to focus our efforts on one post-season game,” said Mark Neville, executive director of the San Diego Bowl Game Association, in a released statement. “The San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl staged exciting match-ups for more than a decade and we were one of the few cities to host two bowl games.”

Average attendance for the Poinsettia Bowl through the years was 32,264, although four of the game’s smallest crowds were in the past six years. The game was broadcast on ESPN and San Diego County Credit Union signage was prominent.
