Credit Union Reps In Cleveland For GOP Convention

CLEVELAND—The Republican National Convention is now in progress here and representatives from NAFCU and CUNA are in town to discuss credit union issues.

Scheduled speakers for the week include House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI), House Financial Services Subcommittee Chairman Sean Duffy (R-WI), Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) and Michael McCaul (R-TX).

“This election cycle is crucial for credit unions, and NAFCU is here to make sure the credit union voice is heard,” said NAFCU Executive Vice President of Government Affairs and General Counsel Carrie Hunt.

CUNA Chief Political Officer Richard Gose said that in addition to CUNA’s team onsite, several leagues are in town as well to spread the word about CUs.

“We have representatives from across the country—from the Northwest, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Utah and a very large contingent from the Ohio Credit Union League,” said Gose. “We look forward to interacting with members of Congress, as well as with state delegations, about credit unions.”

A big part of conversations, said Gose, will CUNA’s “middle class” campaign, an effort by the trade association to emphasize to Washington that the middle class and credit unions go hand in hand.

Wednesday CUNA will cut the ribbon on its annual “leave-behind” project, this year a Horticultural Therapy Suite at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital here.
