Credit Union CEO Testifying Before House Committee Today

WASHINGTON–A credit union CEO will be testifying before Congress today.

Karen Harbin, the president and CEO of CommonWealth Credit Union in Frankfort, Ky., is scheduled to testify before the House Financial Services Committee during a hearing titled “Politicized Financial Regulation and its Impact on Credit and Community Development.”

Harbin is testifying on behalf of America’s Credit Unions, which said she will discuss CFPB reforms and the effects of the Bureau on credit unions.

The testimony and hearing come at the same time America’s Credit Unions has hosted its Governmental Affairs Conference in Washington, with several thousand CU reps hiking the Hill and meeting with legislators and their staff and part of the event.

Also on Agenda

The committee will also discuss several pieces of legislation, including the credit union-backed Secure Payments Act, introduced by Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-MO). The bill would halt implementation of the Federal Reserve’s debit interchange proposal until quantitative analysis impact analysis is conducted, ACU noted.

Joining Harbin in testifying are:

  • Nicholas Anthony, policy analyst with the Center for Monetary and Financial Alternatives at the Cato Institute
  • Lindsey Johnson, president and CEO of the Consumer Bankers Association
  • Santiago Sueiro, senior policy analyst with Unidos US

The hearing will begin today at 10 a.m. ET and will be streamed live on the committee’s website.
