WASHINGTON–While it may not seem possible, the environment for getting any additional legislation through the current Congress has only become more difficult.
A sharply divided Congress had already stymied progress on anything but the most necessary of legislation this year, leaving credit unions to hope their priorities might be included in larger, omnibus bills.
The situation became even more tenuous with the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, which has largely dominated Congress’ attention. And now the situation is even more complex, with the divisive issue of abortion moving to the forefront with the Supreme Court expected to reverse Roe vs. Wade and members of Congress vowing to take action.
And then if all that were not enough to bog down Congress, the primary season is underway for Fall elections.
“Once you’re into election season it’s very hard to get anything done unless it’s a small, absolutely necessary, noncontroversial bill,” said NAFCU VP-Legislative Affairs Brad Thaler, who acknowledged any legislation fitting that description is rare. “It’s not like we’re going to see a lot of bills passed into law for the reminder of the year, at least before the election. There could be some things that are dealt with in lame duck session.”
