WASHNGTON–It’s expected to be another busy week on Capitol Hill, with one person saying it has the potential to be a “great” week for credit union-related issues.
Jason Stverak, deputy chief advocacy officer for federal government affairs for CUNA, said that for the third straight week delegations representing state leagues will be hiking the Hill to advocate for their positions, one of which continues to be opposition to the proposed credit card bill that is now before both the Senate and the House.
But there is also legislation that credit unions favor currently before Congress, including HR 6889, the Credit Union Board Modernization Act, which is scheduled to be brought up on the House floor this week.
That legislation has 102 sponsors, including 55 Republicans and 47 Democrats, said Stverak. “We urge the House to act quickly and get it to the president for his signature,” he said.
But it isn’t just credit unions taking a strong interest in Congress this week, as funding for the federal government is set to expire on Sept. 30. For that reason, Congress is expected to vote on at a continuing resolution (CR) that would provide at least temporary funding to get the country through the rest of the year.
Funding for NFIP
Stverak noted Congress will either pass a CR that includes language from Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) related to energy permits, or will move forward with a “clean” CR that does not include the contentious language.
The CR is also of great interest to credit unions as it includes funding for the National Flood Insurance Program.
