PLANO, Texas–The Cornerstone Credit Union Foundation, the charitable arm of the Cornerstone CU League, is reporting it has provided assistance to more than 1,000 people.
In the five months since Hurricane Harvey hit Texas, the Foundation has been raising funds to help victims, many of whom lost homes, livelihoods and memories to heavy flooding.
According to the Cornerstone Foundation, it has provided grant assistance to 1,342 individuals affected by Harvey, totaling $2,100,680. Of those individuals, 1,236 were credit union staff and 106 were credit union volunteers.
“Hurricane Harvey was the most traumatic experience I have been through in my 61 years of life,” said Beth Arnold of Wesllspring Credit Union in a statement first published by the CCUL. “My husband and I had to be rescued by boat while my home and vehicles were underwater. I live in Bridge City, one of the hardest hit areas. I am about to start my third year of CUNA Management School, and I am so proud to be a part of the credit union movement. Even in the storm you find blessings, and the disaster relief grant I received from the Cornerstone Credit Union Foundation was one of those blessings.”
The Foundation said the philosophy behind its disaster relief grants program is to assist credit union staff and volunteers with getting back on their feet so that they may return to serving their members; thus, truly exhibiting the “People Helping People” philosophy.
