Cops Giving Up Donuts, And Credit Unions Are In on Caper

PENSACOLA, Fla.–Police here are have gone on a donut strike, and two local credit unions are helping.

All this week the Pensacola Police Department (PPD) and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office (ESCO) said they are going on a strike “against their beloved donuts” as part of an effort to “arrest hunger” and encourage donations to a local anti-hunger organization, Manna.

“A donut strike plays into the clichéd depiction of a police officer, but knowing that one-in-four children go to bed hungry in our counties is definitely worth every effort to help,” said PPD Chief Tommi Lyter.

All this week police say they have vowed not to devour a single donut until 2.5 tons (5,000 lbs.) of food has been donated to fight hunger in the local area. “Once the goal has been reached, the teams will return to shamelessly devouring the glazed goodness that all police officers know and love,” police said in a statement.

Each day, the PPD and ESCO are announcing a location, via their social media, accepting donations from 3 to 6 p.m. People can also donate at any Escambia County branch location of Gulf Winds FCU and Pen Air FCU, as well as other organizations (including two donut shops).
