WASHINGTON–A former IT worker for a Florida congresswoman has been arrested as he was attempting to leave the country and charged with fraud against Congressional FCU.
Imran Awan, 37, was terminated earlier this week following the arrest, according to David Damron, a spokesperson for Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), who formerly served as chairperson of the Democratic National Committee.
Awan was arrested at Dulles International Airport after buying a ticket to Pakistan with a return flight set for January, according to authorities. He has been arraigned on charges of bank fraud for allegedly attempting to get a loan from the Congressional Federal Credit Union on a rental property by claiming it as his primary residence, USA Today reported.
Awan has pleaded not guilty. His passport has been confiscated and he has been outfitted with a GPS monitoring device.
According to authorities, Awan's wife, Hina Alvi, flew to Pakistan in March of this year with the couple's three children. The federal court complaint says the children had been abruptly taken out of school in Virginia and that an examination of her luggage found she was carrying $12,400 in cash. Hina Alvi was allowed to leave for Pakistan.
The federal complaint alleges that Awan, along with Alvi, "engaged in a schedule to defraud" the credit union.
