WASHINGTON–Even with the U.S. tax code likely to get the scrutiny of Congress this session, the credit union tax exemption will not be threatened, according to a number of members of Congress who addressed CUNA’s Governmental Affairs Conference here.
Among those pledging their faith to the tax exemption were:
- Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown, a member of the Senate Finance Committee, who said, “I want to be clear that no proposals to change the tax status of credit unions will not be considered.”
- Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI), who told credit unions he will be a “staunch defender” of the credit union tax exemption.
- Rep. Pete Aguilar, the newly elected Democrat from California who is a former employee of Arrowhead Credit Union, who made it clear credit unions were a huge influence on him and who expressed his strong support for CUs.
