ARLINGTON, Va.–Congress may be on recess, but the opportunity for CUs to meet with their representatives is anything but, according to one person.
“The great thing about recesses is lawmakers are back home in their states and districts, so we always encourage credit unions to use this time to try to get in district meetings, invite lawmakers to tour the credit unions, and to attend events,” said NAFCU VP-Legislative Affairs Brad Thaler. “It’s actually a chance for face time with lawmakers, and that can be an important resource in getting to know them. Sometimes, even congressional staff are back in the districts. In particular in a year like this, with a number of things coming up on the docket in September, credit unions can use this time to make contact when times are a little less hectic.”
Thaler acknowledged the slowdown in August can be a challenge for CUs, however, as many CU leaders also take vacations during the month.
“But we have found this to traditionally be a good time to reach out to lawmakers and staff, he said. “And even if you do not get to them right away, there is always next week. Other times during the year the recesses are just one week long. This being an election year, lawmakers are likely to be in their districts.”
