WASHINGTON––Both the House and Senate have returned to Washington for the lame duck session of the 117th Congress, and that will include two hearings this week on oversight of federal financial regulators, with NCUA Chairman Todd Harper to be a witness at both.
Today, the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs will hold a hearing at 10 a.m. titled, “Oversight of Financial Regulators: A Strong Banking and Credit Union System for Main Street.”
On Wednesday, the House Committee on Financial Services will hold its version of the same hearing.
The Senate will also continue its work on various nominations.
Meanwhile, as CUNA’s deputy chief advocacy officer Jason Stverak noted, “This Congress still has a lot of work to do,” and that includes passing the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) and a bill to fund the federal government.
As CUToday.info has reported, credit union reps on Capitol Hill are advocating both for or against a number of bills and provisions that could be included in larger bills, such as the NDAA. That includes the CU-opposed credit card interchange bill and any language that would give NCUA authority over third parties, as well as the credit union-supported board modernization bill.
While this is a lame duck session of Congress, Stverak said the “makeup of the next Congress” will impact this Congress, especially as power in the House switches to the Republicans.
