WASHINGTON—Congress has returned from its summer recess and the actions—or lack of action—it takes could have fallout for credit unions, including those that serve certain federal employees.
While a vote on President Obama’s Iran treaty and funding around Planned Parenthood will get much of the focus, Congress must also pass a spending bill in order to avoid yet another government shutdown. Congress has until Sept. 30 to pass a bill funding the federal government; otherwise, CUs will likely again be offering relief to affected employees going without paychecks. Congress has not met that funding deadline for the past 18 years.
Among other legislation of interest to credit unions now that Congress has reconvened are bills related to cybersecurity in the Senate; the House has already passed a version of the cybersecurity legislation.
NAFCU will also be hosting its annual Congressional Caucus in Washington next week, with a full slate of congressmen on the agenda.
