Congress Back as CUs Prepare to Hike Hill; Hearings are Scheduled

WASHINGTON—Congress returns to session this week as thousands of attendees from CUNA’s GAC will Hike the Hill and meet with their respective members of Congress. 

NAFCU, too, said it will be active on Capitol Hill as the House Financial Services Committee holds a markup of several bills.

Happening this week in Washington:

Wednesday, the House Small Business Committee will hold a hearing with newly-confirmed Small Business Administration (SBA) Administrator Jovita Carranza.

Wednesday, NAFCU and several member credit unions are meeting with Treasury Department Deputy Secretary Justin Muzinich. NAFCU noted it has previously met with Treasury Department Secretary Steven Mnuchin and recently shared with him details about credit union-bank mergers.

CFPB Symposium

Also Wednesday, the CFPB holds the next symposium in its series, this one focused on Section 1033 of the Dodd-Frank Act which relates to consumer access to financial records. Following remarks from bureau Director Kathy Kraninger, attendees will hear from experts on three panels covering:

  • The current landscape of holders of consumer data and the benefits and risks of consumer-authorized data access
  • Market developments in consumer-authorized data access
  • The future state of the market, as well as considerations for policymakers on how to ensure consumer data is safeguarded while ensuring that consumers have continual access to their data

Thursday, the House Foreign Affairs Committee will hold a hearing on the coronavirus.

Also Thursday, NAFCU Vice President of Legislative Affairs Brad Thaler is attending an event hosted by the CFPB and the Department of Defense (DoD) Financial Readiness Network to discuss efforts to promote financial literacy among servicemembers.
