Congress Back Home for Two Weeks; CUNA to Host Simulated Ransomware Attack At CU House

WASHINGTON–With Congress home on recess for the next two weeks, both CUNA and NAFCU are urging their member CUs to be in contact with their representatives on several issues.

CUNA said it has encouraged CUs to thank any of the 321 members of the House who voted in favor of the SAFE Banking Act, which addresses federal prohibitions around serving cannabis-related businesses in those states where voters have approved such measures.

Both trade groups also continue to press Congress, especially members of the conference committee, on language in the National Defense Authorization Act that would or would not allow banks access to military bases. The House version does not include the language, the Senate version does.

NAFCU EVP and General Counsel Carrie Hunt said there is no timetable in place to hash out the differences between the two halves of Congress, and she expects discussions to continue for several more months.

Separately, CUNA this week will be hosting an event in conjunction with National Cyber Security Awareness Month during October. On Thursday at Credit Union House in Washington, CUNA will be hosting an exercise simulating a ransomware attack.

CUNA said the objective is to help its members prepare for such attacks, including their responses.
