Condition Worsens: Another Medical Lab Reports a Breach

NEW YORK–Just one day after Quest Diagnostics reported a data breach that could compromise as many as 12-million consumer records, one of its competitors is reporting it, too, has been breached and that as many as 200,000 financial accounts may have been accessed.

LabCorp said patients' personal information may have been exposed through its third-party billing collections vendor, American Medical Collection Agency. The unauthorized access took place between August 1, 2018, and March 30, 2019, LabCorp stated

The company said it has referred millions of customers to AMCA for billing collections, and 7.7 million customers had their data stored in the system that was hacked.

Consumer information that was exposed includes customers' first and last names, credit card and bank account numbers, birth dates, addresses, phone numbers, dates of service, healthcare provider information, and the amount customers owed. LabCorp said medical information and Social Security numbers were not breached.

200,000 Cards/Accounts May Be Accessed

In the Quest breach, it is believed that in addition to payment information, Social Security numbers were also exposed.

According to LabCorp, approximately 200,000 customers' credit card or bank account information may have been accessed, and it is sending notices to those customers. It said AMCA plans to offer affected customers identity protection and credit-monitoring services for two years.

LabCorp also said it is discontinuing its relationship with AMCA, with AMCA saying it has taken down its web payments page.
