Community First CU Alerts Members to Data Breach

Editor's Note: This story has been updated to reflect the fact the investigation of the incident concluded in April.

SANTA ROSA, Calif.–Community First Credit Union has alerted members it has been hit by a data breach. CFCU said the breach may have involved Social Security numbers, names and account information, according to the North Bay Business Journal.

According to the report, the investigation was concluded in April, but the breach itself occurred between Sept. 6-7, 2023. It prompted a now-completed probe that involved the FBI and the California Attorney General’s office.

The $824.4-million Community First has also hired a cybersecurity firm to assist in the investigation.

The credit union said in a statement it learned “an unauthorized third party obtained access to the contents of one employee’s email account in an attempt to commit financial fraud against the company. There is no evidence indicating that your information has been used for identity theft or financial fraud.”

No Info on Members Affected

The credit union has declined to say how many of its more than 60,000 members were affected by the breach or how they were tipped off that it had occurred, the North Bay Business Journal said.

“We can confirm that none of our employees, current and former, were involved in any malicious activity related to this event,” credit union spokesman Andy Dickhut told the publication.

The Business Journal added it’s also unclear whether the credit union has heard from members who have reported suspicious activity on their accounts.

Community First is offering free credit monitoring to members, including providing a code for a free credit check via Experian by Aug. 30. Members may also place fraud alerts on their credit files for creditors as well as a credit freeze.
