Columbia CU Crossing River To Open Branch In The ‘Goat Blocks’

VANCOUVER, Wash. – Columbia Credit Union for the first time will be opening a branch outside the state of Washington–and it will include unusual amenities such as dog watering stations and bike tire pumps.

The credit union plans to open its first Oregon branch in what it described as the diverse and vibrant Buckman neighborhood of southeast Portland. The branch is scheduled to open later this year becoming the credit union’s 13th branch. Columbia CU said it already serves more than 5,000 families on the other side of the Columbia River.

The new facility will be located in what is known as the “Goat Blocks”– because a quirky herd of urban goats once grazed there–and will be part of a new development that offers convenient one-stop shopping at a mix of tenants that includes Market of Choice, Orchard Supply Hardware, Chipotle and other stores and restaurants.

“At Columbia Credit Union, our legacy of listening allows us to create solutions that work for our communities based on their preferences. We’ll be chatting with local residents and business owners to find out what makes our Buckman neighbors tick,” said Columbia Credit Union President and CEO Steve Kenny in a statement. “We want to provide value beyond the expected. Things like dog watering stations, bicycle tire pumps and other forms of out-of-the-box thinking are some of the ways we’re looking at providing benefits to the community. We’re also seeking input on what we should call this branch from those who live there.”

Columbia CU said the new branch is expected to use sustainable materials and offer some of the latest technology including digital video displays, state-of-the-art digital self-serve ATMs for withdrawals, transfers, inquiries and envelope-free deposits which reduce paper use. ATMs will also provide the future capacity to connect with remote experts, the credit union said.

CCU said it is known for proactive community support and sustainable practices. Several of its branches were built to LEED Gold standards and it is recognized as a Green Business through the Clark County Green Business Program. Green-build practices will be used where possible in the construction and furnishings of this new branch.
