Cleaning Ladies Charged With Stealing Supplies, Member Data—From Police CU

PITTSBURGH—Two women who worked as cleaning staff at Greater Pittsburgh Police Federal Credit Union here are accused of stealing credit union supplies and member data.

Police have arrested 50-year-old Bonnie Hendzel and 50-year-old Mary Tumminello. Both are accused of stealing drinks, coffee, creamer, toilet paper, paper towels and members’ personal information.

According to the criminal complaint, credit union managers noticed items starting to disappear from the $63-million CU. They suspected the cleaning ladies and reviewed surveillance video, which allegedly showed Hendzel and Tumminello searching through file cabinets where credit union member’s personal information could be accessed.

The two are also allegedly seen on tape stealing some drinks.

Detectives went to the local home of Hendzel, where Tumminello also lived. Authorities found empty stamp bags and hypodermic needles, an open box containing credit union paperwork and confidential files belonging to credit union members.

During a police interview, Tumminello was wearing a Pittsburgh Police FCU sweatshirt, which she admitted was stolen. She also admitted to stealing items from the credit union.

According to the criminal complaint, both Tumminello and Hendzel told officers they thought about taking the members’ information, having a friend make fake identification cards and using those for personal gain. They both said they intended to apply for credit cards, buy items and use the fake IDs to sell those items to pawn shops.

Both woman face charges of identity theft, burglary, theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property.
