WASHINGTON–CUNA has reacted positively to the early actions being taken by NCUA and its new chairman, Rick Metsger.
Ryan Donovan, CUNA’s chief advocacy officer, said the trade group has been pressing for some time for greater “examination fairness” and that it is now starting to see some “meaningful progress at NCUA.”
“Rick Metsger has prioritized several projects that are going to have a large impact on credit unions and how they interact with NCUA,” said Donovan, noting CUNA staff had earlier met with NCUA Director of Examination and Insurance Larry Fazio, and “come away with the belief this is headed in a very positive direction for credit unions. It’s going to take some time, but we believe it will be worth the effort.”
Donovan said CUNA staff and a number of committees, along with the CUNA Councils, will be working with NCUA to develop a set of principles to guide it through the process and to ensure NCUA hears from those inside credit unions who work closely with examiners.
Separately, with the House and Senate in recess this week, NAFCU is urging credit union representatives to visit with lawmakers while they are working in their home districts and states to discuss top industry issues, including data security and regulatory relief.
