Change Needed: NAFCU, CUNA Join Other Groups in Calling on Treasury to Address Lack of Coins

WASHINGTON—NAFCU and CUNA have joined with several trade associations in sending a letter to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, calling for the department to use its platform to raise public awareness of the coin circulation slowdown, and publicize the need to get coin moving in the economy once again.

In July 2020, the U.S. Mint and Federal Reserve established a U.S. Coin Task Force to address the mounting coin circulation problem, which is primarily a result of the coronavirus pandemic shifting a large number of transactions from cash-based to card-based payments.

In the joint trades letter, the group highlighted the task force’s initiatives, which included encouraging consumers to use exact change when making cash purchases and depositing coins at their financial institution or redeeming them at a convenient coin kiosk.

However, as coin circulation issues continue to persist, the group urged Treasury to amplify the task force's messaging to "help the most coin-dependent of consumers and the financial institutions and retailers that serve them."
