Caution: Watch Out For Black Friday Stampedes at These CUs

GOSHEN, Ind.—Traditionally limited to the day after Thanksgiving, Interra Credit Union is hosting a Black Friday Sale that is actually running all this week.

The credit union is offering various deals, with some limited to a single day while others will become available Nov. 28 and run through Dec. 6. Some require a branch visit, while other offers are only available online.

Among the “Black Friday Door Busters”: In a deal available to the first 10 consumers only, Interra is offering a “My Rewards” checking account paying 5% APY on balances to $10,000 for 12 months. It is available online only, and from 12-midnight to 12-noon on Nov. 28.  The account must be a new checking account and must remain open for at least six months.

The “Cyber Monday Door Buster,” available on Dec. 1 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., is a 12-month CD paying 5% APY with a maximum amount of $5,000. It must be opened Monday only, and is limited to the first five members to open it.

Deals that will be running all week include up to $100 to open a 50/50 Checking Account (available in-branch only), and a 33-month Bump-Up CD paying 1.75% and requiring a $500 minimum. It also must be opened in-person, and offers the account-holder a one-time bump up to the then current 36-month dividend rate within 18 months of the opening of the CD. That new rate will apply only to the remainder of the term.

  • Other credit unions also using Black Friday to market products and services, include 1st Financial Credit Union in Missouri, where the promotion is actually running the entire month. 1st Financial is promoting auto loans starting at 2.49%, and offering up to $100 on refi’s.
  • * In Washington, Bank-Fund Staff is offering fixed-rate personal loans with five year terms priced at 5.99%.
  • In California, Fiscal CU has cut the rate on its personal loans in half, with rates starting at 4.87%. It is also offering 60 days until the first payment needs to be made.
