Catastrophic S.C. Flooding Closes CU Offices

COLUMBIA, S.C.—The main office of the Carolinas CU League, along with several credit unions in this state, are closed today due to the catastrophic flooding that has claimed the lives of at least seven people and forced hundreds to be rescued.

Brandon Pugh, VP of PR and communications at the CCUL, said the league’s main office is closed Monday as a matter of precaution.

“Flooding has not affected our building, but we don’t want employees driving to work in these conditions. So we are closed for today,” said Pugh.

That same situation is why at least five credit unions have closed today, said Pugh, who added that the league is collecting information from credit unions to see if any buildings have been damaged by the torrential rains and flooding, and to learn what credit unions are doing to assist members impacted by the storms.

The CUs the league has learned are closed are: Carolina Collegiate FCU, Palmetto Citizens FCU, Palmetto Trust FCU and SAFE FCU—all located in Columbia; SC Federal CU and Heritage Trust FCU in Charleston; Georgetown Kraft CU in Georgetown and Mid Carolina CU in Lugoff. (Columbia)

Pugh said the league is working through the Carolina CU Foundation to coordinate relief efforts that may be needed. The league’s statement and print processing CUSO, Palmetto Cooperative Services in Columbia, is open today.

“(PCS) employees who have been able to get in are working,” said Pugh.

NCUA Assistance

NCUA said it is closely monitoring conditions in South Carolina and is prepared to assist credit unions affected by the flooding.

"Regional agency staff are contacting credit unions in areas hit by the flooding to determine if they are open. The agency will be ready to assist credit unions to maintain or restore normal operations, if necessary. NCUA’s Office of Small Credit Union Initiatives can provide Urgent Needs grants up to $7,500 to low-income credit unions for unexpected costs related to restoring operations disrupted by the floods," the agency stated in a release.
