Canvas CU Pays Off $60,000 in School Lunch Debt

LONE TREE, Colo.–A credit union here has made a big gift at the holidays to pay off unpaid lunch debts for students at Lansing Elementary School.

On Wednesday, exactly a week before Christmas, the school received a holiday gift check of $60,000 from Canvas Credit Union. The credit union’s CEO, Todd Marksberry, presented the check to Aurora School Superintendent Rico Munn.

“We are always looking for new ways to make a greater impact with our communities, especially when it comes to supporting the people who need it the most,” said Marksberry. “This donation is only the beginning of great things to come. We are already dreaming about a next phase of this effort, bringing our family of Colorado credit unions together to manifest even more positive change in the future.”

According to the Denver Post, Lansing is one of 18 Aurora schools qualified for Title I low-income funding, with Principal Jennifer Murtha saying approximately 6% of her students come from homeless families.
