California CUs Close Branches, Offer Help As Wildfires Spread

CAPITOLA, Calif.–Credit unions across portions of California have announced branch closures, changes, loan offers and more in response to dozens of wildfires in the state that have displaced thousands of people.

With wildfires in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties, Bay FCU closed its branches in Salinas and Scotts Valley, Calif.

The credit union is also offering $1,000 emergency loans to members who have been evacuated. “These are short-term, low-interest loans and no credit score or documentation is required,” it said on its website.

In a letter to members, Bay FCU CEO Carrie Birkhofer said, “My thoughts are with all of those who have been impacted, and with the first responders working towards containment. I want you to know that Bay Federal is here for you.”

Added Birkhofer, “It is possible that evacuation orders and smoke conditions will necessitate the further modification of branch services, up to and including temporary closures. Please check our website for current information before visiting a branch.”

Bad Air Quality

In Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz Community Credit Union has closed its office due to air quality issues.

It, too, is offering emergency loans. “If you are in need of some help with day-to-day expenses or to fill the gap in your monthly income, SCCCU is here to help with low-rate emergency loans,” SCCCU said.

It is also offering members the option of deferring loan payments.

Insurance Reminder
At Redwood Credit Union, which has been a leader in helping its communities recover from wildfires and in raising and distributing aid funds in recent years, it has included information on its website for members who evacuate to temporary housing, noting some insurance policies cover the expenses.
