'CUs' To Get Publicity From Arena Without Buying Naming Rights

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.–Credit unions is this state will be getting some free—but indirect—publicity as the result of a name change on an events center.

The University of Colorado is seeking to secure a new naming-rights partner for its basketball and volleyball arena which has been known as the Coors Events Center. For now, it will be called the CU Events Center until a new sponsor can be found. The arena was completed in 1979 and was named the Coors Events Center in 1990 following a $5-million donation from the Coors Foundation, which is headquartered in Golden, Colo.

“CU,” as the University of Colorado is known, will be used until it can be renamed. The university said Coors has indicated it is not interested in a new naming rights deal, according to the Denver Post.

As CUToday.info reported here, University of Colorado rival Colorado State has recently reached a $37.7-million naming rights deal with Canvas Credit Union (formerly Public Service Credit Union) to put the CU’s new name on the school’s football stadium. That deal is for 15 years.
