DETROIT–A number of credit unions nationally have stepped up efforts to help striking workers at General Motors. In all, some 49,000 GM workers remain on strike as negotiations continue between the company and the United Auto Workers.
Workers are on strike over wages and healthcare costs. It is the first UAW strike against GM since 2007.
In Lansing, Mich., LAFCU, a local credit union, is offering relief to these workers through loans, debt consolidation, refinancing options, and overall financial advice.
Kelli Ellsworth-Etchison of LAFCU told 6 News, “I mean I’m impacted personally, my husband works for GM and he’s walking the picket line, and so we’re just here to make sure our members have a resource that they can lean on when they need it.”
In Dayton, Ohio, DayMet Credit Union said it is now offering skip-a-payments and strike assistance loans to affected workers.
ELGA Credit Union in Burton, Mich., was also featured in local news coverage for its assistance programs. That report can be found here.
