CUs, Members in 2 More States Hit by Skimmers

BOISE, Idaho — Credit unions and their members across the country continue to be affected by card skimmers, with many members finding their accounts have been drained. The latest to report problems are CUs in Idaho and Oklahoma.

As CUToday.info reported here, credit unions in Virginia and Michigan this week also reported member accounts being affected as the result of skimmers.

In Idaho, Capital Educators FCU (CapEd) told members in an email that skimmers have been found on ATMs at three of its branches. The skimmers were found less than a month after local police warned residents that skimmers were being found on ATMs across Boise, according to KIVI-TV.

CapEd officials told the news outlet the credit union has reached out to all of the members whose cards were impacted, but it does not have contact information for any non-CapEd customers who might have used the ATMs. The credit union said it is also implementing new card reading technology at their ATMs to prevent future incidents. Those machines should be installed by August 10.

‘Angry’ Members in Tulsa

Meanwhile, in Tulsa, Okla., KJRH reported “several angry Tulsans” say a scammer targeted a branch of Tinker FCU with a skimmer. The credit union is reporting between 200-300 members are potentially affected, and that it has contacted members and provided replacement cards, and has also replaced any money removed from accounts.

According to the news outlet, the credit union believes the members’ card numbers were sold to people in Las Vegas and New Mexico.
