CUs, Employees Across Country Used Monday to Give Back, Volunteer in Communities & More

TUKWILA, Wash.–Numerous credit unions and their employees across the country contributed to their communities during Indigenous People’s Day with a variety of different efforts.

In Minnesota, as part of CU Forward Day, the Minnesota Credit Union Network reported employees from 65 credit unions and their partner organizations contributed to their communities by giving back. The effort included volunteerism, fundraising and community service projects, the MCUN reported. In 2021, more than 2,300 people participated in the program that began with Affinity Plus Credit Union.

Eighth Annual BECU Cares Day

In Washington State, nearly 2,700 employees of BECU participated remotely in the credit union’s eighth annual BECU Cares Day. Employees assembled approximately 27,000 kits from home that 10 nonprofit organizations in Washington and South Carolina will distribute to the individuals and groups they serve.

The kits vary by each partner organization and include items to support personal care, home cleaning, education and more, BECU said.

The 10 nonprofit organizations that benefitted included Alimentando al Pueblo (King County, Wash.), Asian Counseling and Referral Service (ACRS) (King County), Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lowcountry (Charleston, S.C.), Chief Seattle Club (King County), College Success Foundation (Greater Seattle), Housing Hope (Snohomish County), Junior Achievement of Washington (Washington), Raising Girls (South Puget Sound), Rise Above (Washington), and Spokane Neighborhood Action Partners (SNAP) (Spokane, Wash.).

The kits were assembled from home while BECU employees also connected with their work teams digitally through video chat.

BECU noted that in years past employees taught financial education to thousands of high school students as part of the credit union’s annual day of service on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, but due to the continued positive response BECU received from providing supply kits to nonprofits in 2020 and 2021, it said it implemented a similar approach for this year’s event.

Community Support in New Mexico

Separately, in Albuquerque, N.M., Nusenda Credit Union employees throughout the state devoted their Oct. 10 federal holiday to support the communities of Albuquerque, Espanola, Las Cruces, Rio Rancho, Santa Fe, Socorro, Taos, and Valencia County. More than 350 Nusenda employees participated, volunteering over 1,400 hours.

"Nusenda has always been committed to making a positive difference in the lives of the communities we serve," said Nusenda President and CEO Joe Christian. "Community Day is one of the many ways our employees put their passion for service into action."

Nusenda's Community Day focus this year was all about taking care of New Mexico's outdoors through environmental and wildlife projects across the state, the credit union said.

12 Partner Organizations

Employees volunteered across the state with 12 partner organizations: Albuquerque BioPark, ARCA, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Taos Dona Ana County Humane Society and The City of Las Cruces, Locker 505, Los Padillas Elementary, NM Volunteers for the Outdoors, NM Wildlife Center, Railyard Park Conservancy, Santa Fe Watershed Association, Save Our Bosque and Watermelon Ranch.

Nusenda said its community impact programs support organizations and people all across New Mexico. The credit union provides employees with 16 paid volunteer hours each year, making it easy for team members to help meet critical needs in the communities they serve.

In addition to volunteerism, Nusenda reported it also contributes millions in financial support by way of sponsorships, grant funding from the Nusenda Foundation, education and financial capability programs, and much more.
