CUs Close Branches Along Florida's East Coast as Hurricane Looms

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.–Credit unions along Florida’s east coast, from West Palm Beach to Jacksonville, have announced branch closings as Hurricane Dorian continues to threaten the coast.

The very slow-moving Dorian has been pounding the Bahamas for more than a days with both high winds and flooding. The hurricane hit the Bahamas just a month after credit unions from around the world gathered in Nassau for the World Credit Union Conference. Ironically, the Worldwide Foundation for Credit Unions announced during that meeting that it had surpassed its $60,000 goal in fundraising for its Project Storm Break disaster relief fund, and had hit $100,000 as the meeting was concluding.

No word on the fate of credit unions in the Bahamas has been provided.

In Florida, Jax FCU and VyStar Credit Union are among those announcing branch closings, in many cases at least through Wednesday. VyStar announced it was closing branches in Florida’s Duval, Clay, St Johns, Nassau, Flagler, Putnam and Volusia counties.

Current storm track projections indicate Dorian could hit the Carolinas and then the rest of the East Coast later this week.
