CUs Backing Number Of Candidates In Today’s Primaries, Run-Offs

WASHINGTON–Primary races and run-offs are taking place in seven states today, with credit unions having taken active involvement in a number of those contests.

There are elections today in Colorado, Maryland, New York, Oklahoma, and Utah, and run-offs in Mississippi and South Carolina.

CUNA’s vice president of political affairs, Trey Hawkins said the trade group’s Credit Union Legislative Action Committee (CULAC) has joined with the respective state CU associations to provide support in the following races:

  • Colorado 2nd District: In the Democratic primary, credit unions are backing Joe Neguse, with whom Hawkins said “credit unions have a terrific relationship.”
  • In New York’s 11th district, CULAC and the New York Credit Union Association are supporting incumbent Republican Dan Donovan.
  • In New York’s 25th district, credit unions have put their support behind Joseph Morelle in the Democratic primary. Morelle has been serving as majority leader of the New York Assembly.
  • In Oklahoma’s first district, Kevin Hern has the support of credit unions in a five-way race for the Republican nomination.
  • In a run-off in Mississippi’s third district, CULAC and the Mississippi Credit Union Association are backing Michael Guess. Guess won 44.9% of the vote in the primary.
  • In the Utah Senate race, credit unions are supporting Mitt Romney for the Republican nomination in the race to fill the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Orrin Hatch.
