CUs Backing Candidates in 2 Primaries Today; CULAC Announces ‘Six Figure’ Expenditure in Senate Race; GA CUs Support Gov

WASHINGTON–Credit unions are backing candidates in primary races in two states today, with the Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC) announcing it has made a “six-figure” expenditure in support of one Senate candidate.

Katie Britt

The primaries are taking place in West Virginia and Nebraska.

The race credit unions are paying most attention to in those two states is the battle for the House seat representing Nebraska’s first district, where Republican state Sen. Mike Flood has CU support.

There are five candidates running for the seat vacated by Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, who was found guilty of campaign finance violations and who resigned. Flood is seeking to fill the seat to finish out Fortenberry’s term and then to win the fall elections to hold the seat full-time.

Investment in Alabama Race

Meanwhile, CULAC is making its first big expenditure in 2022 for a “political communication campaign” to back Katie Britt, a Republican who is running for the Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Richard Shelby, who is  not running for re-election. Britt, who is a former chief of staff for Shelby, has a law degree from the University of Alabama, where she was also student body president. She has also led the Alabama Business Council.

“We know from her background as a proven leader in the business community that she has a deep understanding of credit unions,” said Hawkins. “She has pledged to work with credit unions to do more. Credit unions are leaning in. The League of Southeastern Credit Unions is providing support, and CULAC has made the maximum donation amount allowed by law.”

Hawkins said the expenditure is targeting 150,000 credit union members who are registered Republicans with digital ads and mailers. The primary is set for May 24.

Support for Governor

Separately, the League of Southeastern Credit Unions has announced its support in Georgia for incumbent Brian P. Kemp for governor and senate president pro tempore Butch Miller for lieutenant governor.

“Credit unions are dedicated to bettering the lives of their members and local communities. Day after day, Georgia credit unions work to identify innovative solutions that will improve the financial well-being of members in every corner of the state,” explained LSCU & Affiliates CEO, Patrick La Pine. “We are thrilled to support these candidates who align with the credit union philosophy of people helping people. We are proud to work alongside Governor Brian Kemp and soon-to-be Lieutenant Governor Butch Miller in helping Georgians achieve financial independence and success.”

LSCU & Affiliates said it will support the candidates financially and through grassroots efforts, and that over the next several months credit unions will continue to have opportunities to speak with these supported candidates.
