WASHINGTON—Bill Hampel, chief economist and chief policy officer at CUNA, retires Tuesday.
Hampel is ending a 39-year career with the trade association, which began in 1978 when he joined CUNA as an economist.
Hampel was promoted to chief economist in 1985, and to senior vice president of research and policy analysis in 1992. He transferred from CUNA's Madison office in 1997, and since then has been a senior member of CUNA's advocacy team.
Hampel also served as interim president/CEO of the association from June to September 2014. He is one of the longest-tenured executives of CUNA, the trade association stated.
CUNA noted that Hampel is an expert on the economy and credit union issues—he has testified before Congress about a number of key credit union issues. Hampel served as a staff member at Navy Federal Credit Union in Virginia during a one-year sabbatical in 1989, where he studied credit union operations and carried out a variety of consulting projects.
Hampel is a member of the American Economic Association and the National Association for Business Economists and holds a doctorate in economics from Iowa State University.
