CUNA Reports It Is MAPping Success with Advocacy Program

Trey Hawkins, CUNA

WASHINGTON—CUNA is reporting its Member Activation Program (MAP) has been effective at helping credit unions to have their voices heard as part of the trade association’s Campaign for Common-Sense Regulation. But CUNA also stated that much more is possible, CUNA is saying. CUNA launched its bipartisan, pro-consumer Campaign for Common Sense Regulation in January of this year.

“This has been our longest-running MAP campaign to date,” said Trey Hawkins, CUNA’s vice president of political affairs. “We feel it’s our best chance in a long time to get some meaningful regulatory relief passed through Congress, and the campaign is a key part of that.”

CUNA said the campaign has seen movement on regulatory relief this year, including the passage by the House of the Financial CHOICE Act, as well as other victories.

To date, 28 credit unions participating in the MAP initiative have emailed more than 1.2 million credit union members, resulting in 36,162 emails sent to 557 different members of this and the previous Congress since launch, CUNA said.

The campaign’s consumer-facing website, www.CommonSenseRegulations.com, has received more than 24,000 unique visitors (with approximately 9,000 of those accessing the site via mobile device), and 80% of visitors took action, CUNA stated.

Nationwide, more than 530 credit unions have enrolled in MAP, with the largest sending more than 350,000 emails, and some sending less than 1,000. More than four million credit union members have been contacted since MAP launched in 2014.

According to CUNA staff, if all credit unions currently enrolled in MAP reached out to members, they would reach 25 million consumer members.

CUNA’s Campaign for Common-Sense Regulation website also includes resources such as:

  • Talking points for visits with members of Congress and regulators
  • Information to help educate employees and members
  • Graphics for branch placement and digital communications
  • Email and social media templates
