WASHINGTON–CUNA plans to begin weighing in more formally on litigation around credit unions being sued for their websites’ alleged violations of the Americans With Disabilities Act.
“We have been very actively engaged in this issue for several months providing guidance to credit unions on the matter,” said CUNA’s chief advocacy officer, Ryan Donovan. “Over the last several months we have been evaluating the litigation and have reviewed more than three-dozen cases to determine where our participation as a trade association can have the greatest impact, including in terms of affecting public policy. I expect we will begin filing briefs on this matter as early as this week.
“We have taken our time to look at this matter from a very broad perspective. understanding from the beginning that this is going to take a long time,” continued Donovan. “Our strategy is a long-time strategy; it’s not an impulsive reaction. We take our position as a steward of the industry very seriously. That doesn’t mean we are going to file three dozen briefs. We are looking to have some targeted impact on this.”
