CUNA Names New EVP to Lead Its Hill Efforts; GAC Keynoter is Named

WASHINGTON–CUNA has named Robert Lewis as its new executive vice president and chief advocacy officer. Lewis, who will lead CUNA’s advocacy efforts on Capitol Hill, succeeds Ryan Donovan, who exited CUNA earlier this year to take over as CEO of the Council of Federal Home Loan Banks.

Robert Lewis

Lewis, the founder and president/CEO of the Van Aucker Group, has more than 20 years of legislative experience involving financial services, CUNA stated. He will start at CUNA January 3.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Robert to the CUNA-league system. His impressive background in financial services and track record of getting things done in Washington, D.C., will be a great benefit to credit unions and their 130 million members,” said CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle in a statement.

Lewis, who founded Van Aucker Group in 2018, previously worked with the Financial Services Institute, House Judiciary Committee, Financial Executives International, and the office of Sen. Zell Miller (D-GA).

‘Excited and Humbled’

“I’m excited and humbled to lead a top-notch advocacy organization like the CUNA-league system and look forward to hitting the ground running to advance policies to help credit unions do even more on behalf of their members,” Lewis said in a statement. “Credit unions have played a vital role in our economic recovery, and I look forward to advocating on their behalf on creating new and future opportunities.”

Creator of Poetic Voice to Address GAC

Separately, CUNA said Sekou Andrews, creator of Poetic Voice speaking, will provide the opening keynote at its 2023 GAC.

“Seamlessly blending inspirational speaking with spoken word poetry, Andrews will offer a creative perspective on embracing failure, encouraging unconventional thinking and being the kind of leader who inspires innovation from within,” said CUNA.

Andrews is the Founder/CEO of SekouWorld, Inc., and innovator of Poetic Voice, a “cutting-edge speaking category that seamlessly fuses inspirational speaking with spoken word poetry,” according to CUNA. His accomplishments include two National Poetry Slam championships, two national poetry tours, two Independent Music Awards, three Helen Hayes Awards, the most “Just Plain Folks” music awards in history, the 2020 ABA Entrepreneur of the Year award, and the first Best Spoken Word Album Grammy nomination for a poet in 30 years, CUNA added.
