CUNA Mutual Says It is Continuing to Work Toward Resolution With Labor Union

MADISON, Wis.–With a labor union suggesting an ongoing impasse over a contract could interrupt service to credit unions from CUNA Mutual Group, the company has responded by saying it is continuing to work toward a resolution.

As CUToday.info first reported here, Office and Professional Employees International Union Local 39, which represents 450 CUNA Mutual employees, said in a statement, “We have been working without a contract in a good faith attempt to reach an agreement, and while we have made significant movement on our proposals, CMG has been unwilling to make the same commitment to its employees.”

OPEIU Local 39 said it sent a letter outlining the issue to more than 7,000 credit union l leaders in the United States.

In a statement to CUToday.info, CUNA Mutual said it “continues to be committed to reaching a fair and competitive agreement with OPEIU Local 39. We aim to provide a compensation package that addresses the key issues the union has outlined. As we continue to meet with the union and work toward a resolution, we are also focused on keeping our operations running for those we serve and we have plans in place to ensure we can do so. We respect the collective bargaining process. As a result, we don't anticipate making any further public comments.”

The Central Issue

According to the union, the contract negotiations have been going on for 10 months. OPEIU said a central issue at stake for the union has been the outsourcing of company positions represented by the union.

A union spokesperson further alleged that CUNA Mutual has outsourced 1,200 jobs over the past 20 years.
