CUNA, MVCU Latest to Donate Funds to Help Maui Fire Victims; Maui County Offering Relief

LAHAINA, Maui–With a branch of Maui County FCU still closed due to the devastating wildfires on the island—the branch survived—additional donations to relief efforts have been announced.

In addition, the credit union is also offering relief.

CUNA said it is donating $20,000, $10,000 through CUAid, the National Credit Union Foundation’s disaster relief system, and $10,000 to the Maui Food Bank.

“The people of Maui are in need of immediate help to recover from these devastating wildfires, and this contribution was recommended by our friends at the Hawaii Credit Union League as a way to help with efforts to take action,” said CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle. “As financial first-responders, CUNA, Leagues and credit unions and our system partners remain committed to taking care of our communities and fulfilling our ‘people helping people’ philosophy as the Maui community works to rebuild.”

Donation From Massachusetts

Separately, in Lawrence, Mass., Merrimack Valley Credit Union (MVCU) said it has established the Hawaii Disaster Relief Fund through its GoodWorks Foundation to support CUAid.

MVCU donated $10,000 to CUAid to assist credit union colleagues in rebuilding their lives.

“We were so sad to hear about these fires and all of the lives, homes and businesses that were lost,” says MVCU President & CEO John J. Howard. “This is when the credit union community is needed most—to help our colleagues rebuild and help provide their members with the support they need during such a challenging time. Our team is happy to contribute to these relief efforts and grateful to CUAid for giving us a trusted way to do so.”

CU Offering Help

Maui County FCU, meanwhile, is offering resources and assistance to its members. On its website MCFCU is offering disaster loans, mortgage payment deferrals, consumer loan deferrals, and a link to a GoFundMe page to make donations to employees who lost their homes.

“We remain committed to caring for our members’ needs and helping those experiencing financial hardship during this most difficult time,” Maui County FCU said.
