CUNA Councils Publish White Paper On ‘Creating A Growth & Measurement Powerhouse,’ How to Lead A ‘Forward-Thinking’ CU

MADISON, Wis. – Two new white papers have been published by several of the CUNA Councils.

The CUNA Lending, Marketing & Business Development, and Operations & Member Experience Councils have joined to publish a new white paper, “Creating a Growth & Measurement Powerhouse.”

“If a credit union has its heart set on growth—real, demonstrable growth—the powerhouse combination of its marketing and business development, lending, and operations and member experience departments must work in tandem,” the Councils said in a statement.

The Councils said the white paper examines the impetus for growth, including:

  • The team of teams approach—how to apply it to the credit union’s growth strategy and experience a greater trajectory
  • Methods for measuring and reporting growth, including which metrics are important to members, the board, the team, and all staff
  • Demonstrating that the strategies and tactics are working to drive the growth sought
  • Benchmarking to document and illustrate progress
  • Dashboarding: what it is, what it looks like, how it’s presented/communicated, and who’s responsible for it
  • Tips for optimizing growth strategies and approaches—for all teams, no matter where they are on the scale of 1 to 10 for growth
  • Balancing strategies to ensure the credit union is growing but that other areas aren’t suffering in pursuit of that growth

Separately, the CUNA HR & Organizational Development Council has published a new white paper, “Inspiring Strategic Thinking: How HR and OD Lead a Forward-Thinking Credit Union.”

“HR and organizational leaders are in a prime position to advocate for, and facilitate, the development of strategic thinking as a core competency among their fellow executives, and at the mid-management and staff levels,” the Council said in a statement. “Member service and back-office staff can also apply strategic thinking in looking for ways to improve processes and procedures in line with the credit union’s top priorities. Within their own department, and in partnership with other business units, HR executives guide the human capital strategy to keep pace with, and anticipate, needed staffing and emerging skill sets and competencies.”

This white paper explores: 

  • The growing importance of strategic thinking from all functional areas of the credit union
  • HR and organizational development’s role in supporting the advancement and application of strategic thinking through formal training, mentoring and modeling programs, and compensation, reward, and recognition programs
