WASHINGTON–Today marks the end of an election cycle in which the Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC), CUNA and its state leagues will have spent $6.6 million in nearly 400 races.
Trey Hawkins, deputy chief advocacy officer for political action with CUNA, said credit unions have supported 398 candidates who are on the ballot today, including 367 in races for seats in the House and 31 in Senate. That includes 61 open seats, 56 in the House and five in the Senate.
“We think these are especially important opportunities for credit unions to get in on the ground floor with future CU champions,” said Hawkins, noting that incumbents are typically re-elected in 90% of races.
Some $3.7 million was donated directly by CULAC to various candidates, with 52% of that going to Democratic candidates, and 48% to Republicans. CULAC is a bipartisan PAC.
In addition, CULAC also spent $2.9 million in this election cycle on nine candidates involved in what Hawkins called “priority races.”
