CU Tax Fight: Budget Reconciliation Text Expected Soon As House Committee Eyes Next Week’s Markup

WASHINGTON--The House Ways and Means Committee could mark up its portion of budget reconciliation next week, meaning the bill’s text would need to be released in the next few days, America's Credit Unions reported, noting credit union leaders met with key committee members this week.

Rep. Michelle Fischbach (D-MN) who serves on the Ways and Means committee, met with a Minnesota credit union contingent Wednesday in Washington. Minnesota Credit Union Network Chief Advocacy Officer Ryan Smith, Co-op Credit Union President/CEO Kayla Reiffenberger, and Magnifi Financial Credit Union CEO Chuck Friedrichs stressed the importance of preserving the credit union tax status to facilitate access to financial services, especially for underserved communities.

The Cornerstone League and Randolph Brooks Federal Credit Union Vice President of Corporate Communications and Public Relations Salvador Guererro met with Rep. Chip Roy (R) Wednesday, ACU said.

Ways and Means Committee members are in the final stages of drafting their tax reform language, and America’s Credit Unions is urging credit unions to activate members, board, and staff to contact members of Congress this week.

"Send messages in support of the credit union tax status by Friday to all members of Congress through the Don’t Tax My Credit Union website. Resources include a social media toolkit, press kit, grassroots handbook, media kit, and more," ACU said.
