WASHNGTON—America’s Credit Unions has launched its series of digital ads across the country to share the message: Don't Tax My Credit Union.
The effort, as CUToday.info reported, is part of an overall campaign to preserve the credit union tax status as lawmakers work on tax reform before key Tax Cuts and Jobs Act provisions expire this year. As CUToday.info has reported, Washington insiders believe this year’s tax fight will be one of the toughest the movement has faced.
“America’s Credit Unions launched the digital ads with a focus on both raising consumer awareness and showing policymakers how taxing credit unions would hurt Main Street communities and the more than 140 million credit union members nationwide. The ads are targeted in the congressional districts and states represented by key tax-writing committee members,” ACU said.
Credit union and league leaders from Pennsylvania and Montana recently met with legislators representing their states to urge their support in preserving the credit union federal income tax status. In a coordinated effort with America’s Credit Unions, leagues and credit unions are scheduling additional Hill visits in the coming weeks, ACU said.
The House Ways and Means Committee has already conducted two tax reform hearings this Congress, and a report of potential government spending reductions included revoking the credit union tax status as an option to counter tax cuts, ACU noted.
Along with the ads, Don’t Tax My Credit Union includes a consumer-facing website, Member Activation Program resources, and support materials for leagues and credit unions.
